Police were called to a complex on Pittwater Road, Manly, following reports of an assault at around 5.45pm on February 27.
They found Guy Hames, who was not a resident of the complex, with serious head injuries in a room. He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.
He died in hospital on Friday, March 15.
Haims, known to his friends as “Creature”, was a famous surfer, well known on the beaches in and around Sydney, from the Northern Beaches to Wollongong.
“We grew up near the beach, started surfing when we were very young. Coming from Avalon, that’s what you did, you surfed,” his brother Mark Hames said today.
Police said he also had links to communities in Sydney’s south, including Hurstville.
Mark Hames today joined police in urging anyone with information about Guy’s death to come forward.
“It was quite difficult, I just didn’t know what happened that day and why anyone would actually want to hurt (Guy),” he said.
He said he had “no idea” why Guy was at the complex when he was attacked, although police said they suspected he was there with “friends and associates.”
Detective Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said detectives had carried out thorough inquiries but were now appealing for more information from members of the public.

“Guy was funny and outgoing and got along with everybody,” Mark Hames said.
“Our whole family is shocked and in disbelief that his life has been cut short – and in such a brutal way.
He said Guy, a Manly Sea Eagles supporter and respected member of the community, “always looked on the funny side of life”.
At first, he said, the family hoped Guy would recover as he lay in the hospital.
“He opened his eyes a few times, but he wasn’t talking at all,” said Mark Hames.
