Police say they are preparing to charge a 17-year-old man with dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop.
The alleged driver sustained minor injuries and was earlier taken to St. George Hospital under police guard for treatment and mandatory tests.
His Ford Falcon was found parked on nearby Downey St with its windscreen smashed. An offensive bumper sticker on the car read: “I drive like an ac***.”
The car was seized for examination.
Meanwhile, police have praised residents who rushed to the man’s rescue, describing their efforts as “brave”.
Akariva Volitiviti said he was alerted to the situation by a loud crash before rushing to help. He then called triple-0 and began CPR.
“I told the operator, please hurry. I think that person is not going to make it if (you) are late,” Volitiviti told 7NEWS.
Unfortunately, the man cannot be saved.
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.
