The family of a young surfer who was allegedly murdered on a New Wales north coast beach last month are relieved to learn a man has now been charged with murder.
Kai Shaffer, 21, was putting on his wetsuit in the car park near Ocean Parade in Coffs Harbor at around 6.40am on May 2 when he was allegedly stabbed.
He later died in hospital from his chest and neck wounds.
Police today arrested a 36-year-old man at a correctional facility in Coffs Harbor and transferred him to the local police station where he was charged with murder.
Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty said circumstantial and forensic evidence linked the accused to the alleged murder.
“He has been in custody since May 2. We think there is already enough evidence to charge this person,” he said at a press conference today.
Dougherty said the 36-year-old man was sleeping peacefully at the time and was known to police because of his alleged history of petty crime.
However, the motives are still unknown and are being investigated.
The community is being urged to come forward with any information that may assist police.
“It’s good to give answers to the family, they’re still grieving,” Doherty said.
“While they are relieved that someone has now been charged, there is still a long way to go in the court case.
“There are mixed emotions about them too.”
Superintendent Joanne Schultz added that the alleged killing has also had a profound impact on the wider community, which has not felt safe ever since.
“We have put every available resource into this investigation,” she said.
The 36-year-old has been refused bail and will appear in court this afternoon.
Anyone who may have CCTV or DVR footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
