Key events

75 min Chance! Sesko tried another of his screams, got a deflection and hit the post. And then …

74 min Chance! Slovenia win a free kick in a dangerous area, five yards from the corner of the penalty area. It’s brilliantly struck by Janza – both drilled and curled – but Sporar’s shot goes wide of the near post. He might have been ambushed though.

71 min Slovenia They brought in the first substitute of the game a few minutes ago – Benjamin Verbich for Petar Stojanovic, perhaps as a result of that rather harsh yellow card.

70 min Slovenia have a decent spell but also leave gaps. Eriksen misses Hoylund and he wins a corner. Meanwhile, one of the Slovenian coaches got a yellow card, I don’t know why.

67 min Chance! At the other end. Beautiful passing ball sent Slovenia far left, only for the man in the middle, Gnezda Cerin, I think he made a mess of the header.

65 min Save! As Højlund presses against him, Oblak continues Slovenia into it, growing large and clashing toe-to-toe with his torso.

62 min It’s Denmark’s turn to spoil a decent move with a through ball, this time a cross. The audience has reached that stage of the game when they concentrate on entertainment.

60 min As the clock ticks down, Slovenia have two promising positions. One is thwarted by an ambush by Cescó – rather questionable – and the other by a poorly struck pass from midfield.

59 min For a few minutes, not much happens, so I can look at the mail. “I’m writing from the west coast of Canada,” says Tristan Sharp, “as a somewhat supportive person Slovenia because I had a nice vacation there. There’s no word on that match, but what a summer to be a Slovenian sports fan, with the Euros, Luka still alive in the NBA Finals and Pogacar going for the Giro-Tour double.”

56 min And now Eriksen produced a wonderful dummy to allow a diagonal ball to reach Heylund. He just can’t stop being the story.

54 min From the ensuing free kick, Denmark go close for a second as the header goes just wide. The free kick was taken, of course, by Eriksen.

53 min One wears two on the front of the cards: Stojanovic, pretty harsh in my book.

50 min A flame of hope for Slovenia as a long throw from the left causes confusion in the Danish box. And then a long throw from the right follows suit as he lures Schmeichel into a failed shot, only for the ball to bounce past the two lurking forwards. There is also a check for a penalty, it is not given.

49 min The first yellow card of the match is for Morten Hülmand for handling Benjamin Sesko. He can’t complain, even though he still does.

47 min Højlund heads forward into the inside right channel. He looks more at home in this team than playing for his club.

Nice detail from the ITV panel. The throw-in that produced a goal was won by Højlund, who received a long flat ball from Schmeichel, held onto it, laid it down and headed into the right channel. So not just a great individual goal: a good team goal too.

Eriksen’s goal was the only shot on target so far. But what a shot it was – a half-volley, at full stretch, with Eriksen deliberately falling to his left so the ball went to Oblak’s right.

“Hi again Tim,” says John Moloney. “Looks good so far. Your comment about the Danish team singing will bring a wry smile to every English “tilflytter” here. Singing is such a big thing here. School. work. Parties. Anyway, the Danes sing. Weird but awesome. So yes, all Danes learned to sing as soon as they started talking. They cannot be stopped.”

HALF TIME! Slovenia 0-1 Denmark (Eriksen 17)

You can guess whose face is on the screen as we come to the end of a half dominated by Denmark. Their only problem is that they have to be 3-0 up.

45 min Just one minute of added time. Eriksen took at least that long to register the shock of his goal.

42 min Eriksen shows that he is only human after all by making bad choices. He takes a shot from D but leaves it too long, allowing a defender to block. And then he finds Row Z with a better chance, close to the penalty spot, after a good cut from Wind.

Henrik Halkier, this is for you.

39 min A sweet move from the Danes ends with another strike from Eriksen, left-footed for a change. Janza gets a good block.

37 min Slovenia entered the Danish penalty area after solid play by Cesko and a dangerous cross from the right. They win a corner only to clear it with a series of square passes and an ambush.

35 min Eriksen previously played for both Spurs and Manchester United in his first season at the same time. He flicks in a cross, then takes another corner. From such a self-contained man, it was a one-man show.

31 min Another shine for Slovenia as they win the ball in midfield and get a three on three but the last pass is a loss.

30 min The player of the match so far, by street, is Christian Eriksen.

30 min Half chance for Andraj Sporar racing through the middle but can’t handle an awkward rebound.

28 min Eriksen again ghosts into the center forward’s area as Bach crosses. Bach had won the ball with a push but the referee didn’t seem to see it. The result is a corner and Eriksen’s follow-up cross, hit with plenty of punches, almost leads to an own goal.
