Daily Wordle Tips
I’ve written a lot about Wordle – from covering his 1000th word to my list of the best opening words to a useful two-step strategy to news about contradictory word changes. I’ve even rounded up what i learned playing the hit online word puzzle all year. So if you’re rethinking your need for the actual answer, you can try advice from one of these stories.
Still need an opening word? One person told me they just look around and pick a five-letter object they spot to use as a starting word — like SOFA or CHAIR. I tend to stick to beginning words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN to begin with, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I have read these people use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words I actually know.
What is Wordle?
If you read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether or not the letters you guessed are in the puzzle, and whether they’re in the same place you guessed they are. New York Times buy the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner and let her narrow the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language down to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. It was also convenient that he had a name that acted as a “word”.
A Times spokesman told me the first Wordle appears on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1000th word on March 15th. Spoiler: That 1000th word was ERUPT. As in “Dad’s going to explode if Wordle is so healthy he loses his streak.”
There are other fun games in the Times Games stable. mine the newest dependency is Connections, which I think is more complicated than Wordle. This is the game where you look at a grid of 16 words and try to fit them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the connections between words are pretty obvious — like the time when all four words started with rock bands, like “Rushmore” and “journeyman.” (Relationships got a little cheeky on April Fools’ Day with puzzle with all emoticons. Some gamers did NOT find this funny.)
