Two children among at least eight people shot at US recreation centre, suspect found dead

The suspect was taken into custody at a home surrounded by officers near the crime scene, police said.
The victims were injured in the shooting at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills and were transported to multiple hospitals with “various types of injuries,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a Saturday evening news conference (local time).
Rochester Hills is about 27 miles north of Detroit.
At least two of the victims were children, authorities said.
One of the victims was eight years old, said Bouchard, who added that he could not comment on the ages of the other victims.
The sheriff emphasized that information is preliminary and the incident changes “by the second.”
Authorities initially said at a press conference Saturday that there were nine, “maybe 10” gunshot wounds.
“I am heartbroken to learn of the shooting in Rochester Hills,” she wrote.
“We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to arrive and are in contact with local authorities.”
“This is a great community and it’s heartbreaking to see this happen here,” Rochester Hills Mayor Brian Barnett said.
The first 911 call alerting police to the incident was made around 5:11 p.m. local time. Bouchard said a Rochester Hills sergeant listened to new technology that reliably streams 911 calls directly to first responders and responded to the scene within two minutes before the call was dispatched.
Authorities found a handgun and three empty magazines at the scene.
Bouchard said it appears the suspect pulled up to the recreation area, got out of a vehicle and opened fire about twenty feet away, reloading several times.
The suspect fired “potentially 28 times,” the sheriff said.
The incident appears to be random and authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack, he added.
The suspect was in his home surrounded by police officers
A man police believed to be a suspect was taken into custody at a home a half-mile from the crime scene, which is surrounded by officers, the sheriff said.
Authorities are bringing in additional assets, including SWAT teams and armored vehicles, to assist officers at the scene, Bouchard said.
“We’re trying to talk to this guy with no response, but we again believe he’s being held there,” he said.
“… We are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for this address.”
The sheriff advised those sheltering in parks to go home and asked people to stay away from the area if they were sheltering nearby.
The suspect was not known to authorities until they conducted a “quick investigation” and determined who they believe was involved based on evidence from the crime scene.
“A vehicle that matched what was described as the vehicle leaving the scene was there,” the sheriff said.
“We set up a quick perimeter and officers on scene apparently heard or saw the person they were trying to communicate with.”
Investigators believe there are potentially more weapons in the home, but it’s unclear if the suspect had access to them, according to Bouchard.
The sheriff called the incident “a gut punch” and stressed that the community is still reeling from the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School, located 15 miles north of Rochester Hills, when four students were killed.
“We don’t even fully understand what happened in Oxford, and now we have another complete tragedy to deal with,” he said.
CNN has contacted the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for more information.
